Up Close with Nitrate Film

We recently returned from The Nitrate Picture Show and had the chance to encounter nitrate film up close. What is nitrate film? It’s a film stock using a base of nitrocellulose. It’s highly flammable and decomposes with age. So it’s dangerous and beautiful. The film stock was used from the 1890s to the 1950s.

One film we got to see in person was La Danse du fue (1899). It’s a hand-colored print and seeing it was stunning in person. You can watch the film here
